Exhausted by the dark age of the recession, rug exhibitors are not only looking to cater to trends, but also to instill optimism in buyers and consumers to increase sales for 2010 and beyond. For this market, new designs seek to bring good fortunes.
Energetic: displaying great vigor or force
These rugs will bring you change.
With asymmetrical shapes driving a contemporary design, the Pastel Visions rug from Kas’ Signature Collection provides an unpredictable jolt of energy, hand-tufted and hand-carved in 100 percent wool.
Foreign Accents’ elegant and refined Chelsea Collection has what they refer to as a “mature modern” design—one that demonstrates that contemporary isn’t a fad, but has longevity and depth. Hand-tufted and hand-carved in New Zealand wool, the collection includes designs such as a white and grey-colored viscose accented with a slight sheen in the yarn that creates a hi-lo effect in a spiral design, and another pattern in a deep, rich red with charcoal black accents that invokes an almost ceremonial/ethnic look and feel.
The Chakkar Onyx rug by Tamarian has great kinetic energy in its pattern. A simple black and white contrast makes it perfect for livening up a simple room scheme. Made of 80 percent Tibetan wool and 20 percent Chinese Silk.

Elegant: stylishly graceful, showing sophistication
These rugs will bring you peace in good taste.
Though intricate, the tribal-inspired designs of Feizy’s Namche Collection still have a casual appeal. Cherished designs from ages past come alive in hand-knotted premium hand-spun wool. Mahal, Samarkand and Kazak patterns are in rich, varied colors that work easily into a variety of room schemes.
Large-scaled Art Nouveau flowers of the Chloe rug from Company C are repeated in an allover damask-like pattern in a simple, two-tone pewter or copper palette. Shimmering rayon yarns give it a subtly burnished metallic patina for a sophisticated, modern effect.
Known for his flashy fashion designs, Bob Mackie’s new collection from Surya features six different designs in four different color-ways. Made of New Zealand Wool and viscose, geometric patterns offer dramatic designs, softened with neutral colors.
Lush 100-line Tibetan weave construction and the rich combination of Chinese silk and New Zealand wool create a look and feel that radiates the warmth, beauty and softness that embodies the Earth Collection. Jaipur offers an elegant range of patterns that take inspiration from ethnic, boldly-scaled motifs accentuated by mineral shades.
Abstract in feel, the Westervelt Collection from Linon Home Décor is a new licensed group of rugs by the famous artist Dan Westervelt. These are eclectic designs in a transitional style using nature and contemporary elements, such as rays of rainbows. The rugs are power-loomed in a thick 13 mm pile height and are hand-carved to capture a fine definition to the designs.
Happy Go-Lucky: to be carefree
and optimistic
These rugs will bring sheer joy in the home with easygoing designs.
Loloi’s new licensing program features the work of artist Kate McRostie, whose style reflects the colors and textures of Tuscany, Normandy and Provence. Placing decorative icons on sophisticated backgrounds, her patterned brushwork evokes the texture of sun-worn damask. When that artwork is translated onto the hooked scatter and accent rugs, the results are rich, stylish and welcoming.
Known for her striking and vibrant design sense, the Emma Gardner Collection at Chandra Rugs has two new different designs including Twinkle, in a grey green palette, and Flowers On Water in hemlock. Simple, cheerful patterns allow each rug to stand out on its own, hand-tufted out of New Zealand wool with a new tufting technique, perfected by Chandra.
Enlarged flowers and ferns in an interesting green/blue pairing make up the tropical motif of the Blooming Heights rug from Kaleen’s new Calais Collection. Made of 100 percent premium virgin wool and hand-tufted in India, this rug illustrates how florals will never go out of style.
New Moon’s Persia rug from its Classic Collection features a unique dyeing technique in the background that allows for the beautiful variation of color. The coloration features various tones of brown, light green, light blue, ivory, tan, yellow, navy blue and orange in Tibetan wool with accents of silk.
From the looks of it, both buyers and manufacturers seem to be on the same page; working together to move away from the dark age of the recession, and on to brighter and more profitable pastures.
