Suppliers are creating versatile indoor/outdoor resources that incorporate the vibrant color palettes and updated styles embraced by today’s design-savvy homeowners
Gone are the days when the predominant “outdoor room” offerings featured neutral tones only and simple border designs. Outdoor textile products mimic the vibrant color palettes and updated traditional and transitional styles that are on-trend in interiors today.
Rather than marketed as separate products for outdoor use, many resources are promoted as “indoor/outdoor” options. The durable materials, often with inherent or added-on easy clean properties, foster versatility, enabling homeowners to use them in indoor high-traffic, spill-prone and pet-frequented areas as well as on the patio or poolside.
Although rugs remain a strong focal point in many outdoor living areas, pillows, poufs, cushions, curtains, vertical panels, tabletop options, and eye-catching upholstery fabrics allow homeowners to create a true, decorated “room” in the open air.
Polypropylene remains one of the materials of choice for outdoor area rugs. Kas offers handmade indoor/outdoor Meridian Collection rugs made with uv-treated polypropylene crafted into a high/low hook and loop pile.
Regarding color fading, Wendy Reiss, key account manager of sales and marketing, Kas Rugs, notes, “Although rugs of this nature are uv treated, all consumers need to understand that anything left out in the elements for an extended amount of time will sun wear, and wear in general. Covered areas always work best.”
Surya’s Storm Collection of indoor/outdoor rugs focuses on vibrant colors in soft modern designs, including stylized florals, butterflies, medallion patterns and tile-inspired designs. The 100 percent polypropylene rugs are hand-hooked and made in China.
Nature-inspired motifs abound in outdoor area rugs. Homefires’ Butterflies and Dragonflies hooked rug, offered in five sizes, is designed by Jennifer Brinley.
Designs in Kaleen’s Home Porch Collection offer a wide range of options from colorful florals and updated ornate traditional patterns to transitional creations.
For consumers who prefer clean-lined options in subtle sophisticated colors, there is the Sun n’ Shade Collection by Waverly from Nourison. The rugs are versatile, soft, easy to clean, uv-protected, mildew proof and fade resistant. Machine printed in China, they are made with 100 percent polyester.
Bali from Oriental Weavers is a machine-made option created with 100 percent polypropylene that blends ivory and cocoa with cool grays and blues, and pops of gold in a modern design. The textured loop construction adds surface interest.
Fabric suppliers have built in fade-resistant, anti-microbial and other features to their products that can be used for outdoor upholstery, pillows and other applications.
The Taza Collection of indoor/outdoor fabrics from World Wide Fabric can pass for up to 800-1,000 hours under sunlight. Made with 70 percent polypropylene and 30 percent polyester, they are protected from liquid spills and offered in five patterns and in seven colors for each design.
Phifer Incorporated recently debuted the Leisurely Living, Garden Getaway, Casual Coast and Canvas Collections in its Designed Fabrics line, with patterns inspired by nature, coastal waters and the tropics. These Phifertex Outdoor Fabrics are infused with Microban anti-microbial protection and their durability makes them suitable for awnings and umbrellas as well as pillows and upholstery applications.
Bella Dura offers synthetic, eco-friendly, recyclable fabrics composed of fibers made with by-products of post-industrial waste. No coatings or finishes are needed, as the fibers are inherently stain-, microbe- and fade-resistant. Cleanable with bleach, the fabrics exceed 1,500-hour lightfastness.
Curtains & Panels
Whether it’s for privacy or decoration or both, outdoor curtains go a long way toward creating the room-like feeling in an outdoor setting.
Commonwealth Home Fashions offers 100 percent polyester indoor/outdoor curtains that are fade- and mildew-resistant, uv-protected, water-repellant and equipped with stainless-steel plated grommets. New patterns include Skyworks, Gazebo, Floral Garden, Gazebo Stripe, Escape Stripe and Esbo.
Versailles’ patented indoor/outdoor Natural & “Enviro” Bamboo Ring Top Panels, which are offered in espresso, cedar and tan stripe, are made with material that captures the look of bamboo, trimmed with uv-resistant polypropylene and include a water-repellant finish. The Easy Glide mounting system includes rust-resistant rings that slide to open the curtain flat or fold it back into a compact stack. The 40-inch wide panels are available in 63- and 84-inch lengths.
The coordinating Duo Tension Stainless Steel Rods from Versailles feature a stainless-steel finish and a dual-mount option for easy installation. For extra security, there is a screw-mount end-cap built into the rod ends. The rods are offered in four sizes, and in nickel and espresso finishes.
Pillows, seating cushions and poufs are a great way for homeowners to bring fashion colors into their outdoor spaces. Surya offers a range of 100 percent polyester poufs filled with non-water-absorbing Therma beans in a range of transitional and modern designs. V Rugs and Home uses outdoor quality Belgium linen in its modern style pillows made in the U.S.
Eating outdoors in style is made easy with low-maintenance options in tablecloths, napkins and placemats. The St. Barth’s tablecloth from Bardwil is made with indoor/outdoor fabric that is colorfast, water repellant and machine washable with no shrinkage. Stains come out easily with hand washing.
Lintex offers a seaside motif in its Starfish grouping, which includes a tablecloth, placemats and napkins made with 100 percent polyester.
With the broad range of options available in the marketplace, there is no excuse for outdoor entertaining not to be a stylish, fun and easy care experience.
