The State Of Textiles In India

How important are textiles to the Indian economy?
The textile sector, including home and apparel, contributes about four percent to the gross domestic product and about 17 percent of the gross export earnings.

The textile industry has expanded from $37 billion in 2004-05 to $49 billion in 2006-07. In this period, while the domestic market increased from $23 billion to $30 billion, exports increased from approximately $14 billion to $19 billion.

The textiles industry in India provides direct employment to about 35 million people.
Where does India stand in world textile material output?

India is the:

• Largest producer of jute
• Second largest producer of raw cotton, cotton yarn, cellulose fiber/yarn and silk.
• Fourth largest producer of synthetic fiber/yarn.
The nation’s textile industry:
• Accounts globally for 61 percent of loomage and 22 percent of spindleage
• Has a 25 percent share in the total world trade in cotton yarn.

While Europe continues to be India’s major export market with 22 percent share in textiles, the U.S. is the single largest buyer of Indian textiles with a 10 percent share. Currently India has about four percent share in the world export of textiles. India leads in world carpet exports with 36 percent of the market share.
