FIT Celebrates 15 Years of Home

The Home Products Development Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.

More than 300 students have graduated from FIT with a B.S. degree in Home Products Development. Alumni have embarked on careers from product development managers, design directors, sales representatives and buyers to merchandise planners and fashion forecasters. Industry leaders and Home Products Development alumni recognize the program’s value as new graduates are hired each year.

The home textile industry’s financial support for 15 years has provided students with scholarships, Senior and Junior Project Awards, technical upgrades and global travel experiences. In addition to annual fund raising for current use needs, endowed funds exceeding $800,000 provide income for annual academic merit, FIT community service and financial need scholarships.

Ingrid Johnson, acting associate chair of Home Products Development, and David Brogna, assistant professor, carry on the legacy envisioned by Peter “Pete” Scotese, chairman emeritus, FIT, and the industry relationships nurtured by Christine Pratt, retired chairperson of Home Products Development. The success of Home Products Development lies in its ability to change in order to meet the needs of industry with graduates who are open to new ideas, willing to hear constructive criticism and able to grow with skills learned as individuals and teams.

FIT thanks the home textiles industry for supporting the world’s only business degree in home products development program in hard and soft lines.

On March 14, 2011, the FIT Home Products Development Department scholarship cocktail reception event will be held at Blu in New York’s Hotel Indigo. The reception honors Barry Leonard, president of Welspun USA, as well as all previous honorees, advisory board members, mentors and industry colleagues who have supported the program.

Live Comfortably Plush Pillows: A three-dimensional effect has been designed into the fabric with flocking and burn-out embodying prints, textures and colors. A sense of fun is enhanced by animal prints rendered in a variety of shapes and sizes. The tonal and solid plush fabrics add decorating versatility to the collection.
Laura Ashley: Debuting are tonal jacquards and printed cotton with floral accents and embellishments to carry on the core beauty of the brand.

Waverly: The traditional Waverly patterns are interpreted into soft tonal fabrications with brighter details and embellishments. The Waverly blue binding, the bright corner silks and embroidered gussets reflect the elegant beauty of the brand.
