Remembering Orion’s Kay Blair

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Kay Blair on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013. She had been part of the drapery hardware community for many years, establishing KBlair Finials in 1994, which later was purchased by and is still produced by Orion Ornamental Iron, Inc.

Born on March 15, 1943, Kay was raised in Atlanta, GA, attended St. Pius X High School, graduated from Georgia State College and was a member of Mensa. She was editor of Contel’s professional magazine for many years.

Throughout her life, Kay appreciated the beauty in nature and well-crafted works of art. Her home was filled with antiques, Art Deco furniture and stained glass. She tended a garden and filled it with flowers, as well as bird feeders and birdhouses for the winged creatures she loved. Inspirations from nature and her love of artistry came through in the creativity she exhibited in her own endeavors, whether she was designing drapery hardware, decorating cakes or creating hand-stitched projects.

A cat lover, she donated her time as Editor of the Good Mews newsletter, volunteered at shelters and opened her home to many rescued feline friends.

Kay was a spiritual person who loved her life. She has been a source of inspiration, and a wonderful friend. She will be greatly missed.

If you would like to donate in Kay’s honor, here are some of her favorite charities: People Making Progress (, Good Mews Cat Shelter (, Best Friends Animal Society (, Healthwell Foundation (, and Society of St. Vincent de Paul (
