The world’s largest collection of centuries-old wood and metal patterned printing blocks provides the designers of the new Zucchi by Mascioni luxury bedding collections with unique inspirations

Home textile designers are always on the lookout for sources of inspiration to aid them in creating fresh motifs. Zucchi by Mascioni luxury bed linens, which debuted in February at the Mascioni showroom in New York, hit the “jackpot” as far as its inspiration sources go.

Produced in Italy by Mascioni, a division of The Zucchi Group, the line draws design ideas from the Zucchi Collection of Antique Handblocks. In 1987, Giordano Zucchi, the son of Zucchi’s founder, purchased a collection of hand-carved wood and metal printing blocks, which has grown to become the world’s largest of its kind. Discovered originally in workshops in England, France and Austria, the 56,000 individual pieces embodying 12,000 patterns date from 1785 to 1935, documenting more than a century of European textile design development.

The block designs have been arranged into six categories: paisley, floral, ornamental, pictorial, abstract and geometric. Although 200 blocks are on display in the New York Mascioni showroom, the bulk of the collection is stored in Italy.

Zucchi by Mascioni, specifically designed for the U.S. luxury retail market, includes two collections of extra-long staple cotton bed covers, shams, quilts and sheeting in 300-thread-count sateen and 400-thread-count percale.

Designs in The Antique Block Collection, which are reproductions from specific blocks in the Zucchi archive, are fashion forward, colorful and produced in one-run, limited editions to be refreshed with new styles and colors each season. The three patterns created for Spring/Summer 2014, now machine printed, recreate the imperfections in tone and slightly uneven registration that would have occurred when block printing was done by hand.

Each of the three patterns is offered in cobalt, Pompeii red, hemlock green and natural, and is available in duvet sets and sheet sets in twin, queen and king sizes.

At the retail level, the pieces displayed in this collection will be accompanied by an iPad stand which consumers can use to customize pattern, color and size for their selection and then send themselves an e-mail including the image and product information.

Bell’arte, the second Zucchi by Mascioni collection, launches with four patterns in open stock queen and king sizes. It is inspired by the Italian lifestyle as well as the wood block design categories. The approach is timeless and classic with elements rendered in neutral colorations.

The value of history lies in what is learned from the past. In the case of Zucchi by Mascioni, artisan-created motifs from the past, updated and married with fresh perspectives reflecting today’s sensibilities, can be appreciated and enjoyed once again.
