NY Market Preview - March 2004

Design Class

HOME FASHION RESOURCES RATE AN ‘A’ FOR THIS SEASON’S NEWEST STYLES AND COLORS

With each season comes a set of themes, colors, and textures that makes it seem as though all the designers have taken the same class. Some will get ‘A’s’ as their designs make it to retail. Others won’t do as well and will have to repeat the class. Let’s review what they’ve learned.

In March expect to see chunky textures (sweater knits), subtle tactile surfaces (microfiber suede everywhere, and chenille (still); a lot of color (keep track of how many names are used for orange and green); tropics (classic); and Asian influence (not Zen again, but more about pattern).

Color is all over the place. Nearly everyone finds brown delicious this market. It goes from cream to coffee to chocolate (both milk and dark). Greens are very healthy–lime, kiwi, pistachio, celery, and even avocado (back from the ’70s). From the same era comes orange. This time around designers have shopped the produce aisle for oranges as well as peaches, papayas, and pumpkins and the spice section for paprika and curry. Plus there’s salmon from the fishmonger.

Brushing up on their geography, designers are happy to share it with retailers. There’s definitely a section on China, especially Shanghai. There’s Shanghai Brocade bedding from Hollander Home Fashions and Elrene’s Shanghai Chic table linens. Other parts of the world have inspired a real travelogue. Raymond Waites goes global with his bed ensembles with a visit to India for the paisley Ashanti, a stop in Africa for Kea, and a holiday in the Greek isles with Naxos.

Hollander is also traveling. In its Crossroads collection, Marangu’s primitive motifs and tactile chocolate chenille are out of Africa. Design Director Fashion Bedding Glenda Heffer has taken a special interest in Latin America, and it comes out in bedding ensembles called Ibiza, Siesta Fiesta, Paradise, and Pina Colada.

Artistic License

Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta’s bedding collections are debuting this market with Oscar, a ‘bridge’ line from licensee Rose Tree Linens. The ensembles are inspired by his homes: his Park Avenue apartment, the country estate in Connecticut, and his beach retreat in his native Dominican Republic.
The Nautica name is now found on blankets and throws by Berkshire Blanket; solid-color, knit, and flannel sheeting from Zorlu USA; towels and bath rugs by Welspun USA; and yarns and fabrics by Kaltex Home. Elrene is also presenting a new collection of Nautica table linens along with one for Jonathan Adler.

The surf’s up at Revman Industries, which is adding to its Dean Miller collection with top-of-bed choices. And TerriSol rides the same wave with its new OP (Ocean Pacific) license for beach towels.
Woolrich, a name synonymous with the outdoor lifestyle, now dresses the table and works in the kitchen with a collection by Fallani and Cohn.

Eileen West brings her signature floral designs to kitchen textiles, knit and flannel sheeting, and top of bed by1888 Mills, while Liz Claiborne is getting organized by licensing Blockwares LLP to produce a line of home-organizing products.

Current Events

Innovation is more than a trend; it’s a necessity in today’s market. True to its name, Sleep Innovations debuts Novaform™ VISIONS, a complete line of bed pillows, mattress toppers, and specialty pillows combining high-density Memory Foam and Memory Comfort Cushions, along with other innovations.
The Zone Diet has been a success and United Feather and Down’s Zone™ Baffled Box Featherbed looks like a winner, too. The patent-pending construction provides increased lumbar comfort and support.

Change of Address

Ashford Court has moved to suite 1515 at 295 Fifth Avenue to accommodate its growing business leaving its previous home in suite 310 available for Jay Franco and Sons to expand into. Thomasville Home Furnishing has also expanded its showroom, suite 1619 at 295. The home fashion resource Westone has made the move from West 38th Street to the center of the home textile district by taking 4,100-square feet, suite 1100 at 230 Fifth Avenue. It’s ‘eastward ho!’ for John Matouk & Co. and Sferra Bros. as they move from their West Side location to 11 East 26th Street, 10th floor.

Even though Kimlor Mills is staying put in its 261 Fifth Avenue showroom (suite 1512), it is expanding its warehouse facilities in Orangeburg, SC, adding 80,000-square feet.

Retailers have their homework cut out for them. They won’t want to be kept back while others graduate with honors–and sales.
