Cococozy is the brain child of Coco—nicknamed so by her grandmother—who works as an executive by day, but who, through her love of interior design, started a blog, which has developed into a home textiles and accessories business. In addition to offering its own brand of pillows, throws and home accessories, Cococozy recently debuted area rug and fashion bedding products in partnership with Capel and DownTown, respectively. Cococozy products are offered through the company’s website (cococozy.com, 310-275-4189) and at a range of brick-and-mortar retailers. Here are insights from Coco on doing business in the 21st century.

How did Cococozy begin?

“Cococozy started as a blog in 2008. The home furnishings collection of pillows and throws debuted in January 2011.

“[In 2008] I was remodeling my tiny cottage in the Hollywood Hills. I was acting as my own general contractor for a kitchen and bath redo. I enjoyed the whole process.

“So when my best friend suggested I start a blog, I decided to write about interiors and design. I did not have a background in the area nor did I do any research...I just started writing. The first month I had 88 page visits to the blog. I could see that my mother visited about 10 or 15 times, my sister a few, my friends as well and the rest of the page visits were me! Today I have thousands of daily page visits from readers around the world. It is quite unbelievable.”

Would Cococozy exist if the internet didn’t?

“If it hadn’t been for the internet and blog, this journey would probably not have started! I think the internet has made unwitting pioneers of so many people.”

Do you have plans to partner with other companies?

“I do have a few more partnerships coming out this year. One upcoming 2013 partnership is with fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger!”

Are your products 100 percent made in the U.S.?

“The custom-made pillows are made in the U.S. from imported base cloth—the printing, design and manufacturing happens on U.S. soil. Our 100 percent cotton throws, lucite trays and candles are all 100 percent made in the U.S.A. Our products are made from quality materials and manufactured with great care here in the states. My license partners, Capel and DownTown, do manufacture rugs and bedding elsewhere.”

What surprised you the most entering the field?

“It is not easy at all. There are so many factors to take into consideration when developing a textiles collection. The consumer would never know that there are so many layers behind even making one pillow!”
