A roundup of manmade and nature-based comfort sleep solutions, some of which are on display during the International Hotel, Motel & Restaurant Show at the Jacob K. Javits Center, Nov. 9 to 12, 2013

Whether they are man-made or derived from nature, today’s comfort sleep products are focused on providing solutions to every discomfort that can interfere with getting a good night’s sleep. Here is a sampling of fiber, fabric and foam solutions that protect the mattress, offer temperature adjustment, wick away moisture and provide comfort, cushioning and correct body support.

Mattress Protection & Toppers

The Therm-A-Sleep Mattress Protector from Protect-A-Bed is temperature regulating in that it provides a cool, comfortable sleep surface that is soft and silky. Made with 100 percent Tencel® fiber, it is ideal for those with sensitive skin. Other benefits of the protector are that it is waterproof, limits bacterial growth, and provides a barrier to dust mites, allergens and mattress stains.

From DownRight Ltd. comes a versatile, reversible mattress pad that features merino wool on one side and cotton on the other. Merino wool provides outstanding body temperature regulation. The natural fiber cradles the body, keeps it warm without overheating and wicks away excess moisture from the skin. The lanolin within the wool makes it water resistant and antibacterial. The DownRight mattress pads are made in Australia, which is renowned for its Merino sheep.

The reversible mattress pad includes a fully elasticized skirt that accommodates mattresses up to 16 inches deep. The pads are offered in twin, full, queen, king and California king sizes.

The ZMS™ Ultra Zone Mattress Topper from Jeffco Fibres includes patent-pending technology that uses two different foams to create a unique support system. It is scientifically engineered with zones that are 10 to 20 percent less firm in sections of the topper where less support is needed to maintain proper spinal alignment during sleep. The zone for the hips, for example, is slightly less firm than the adjacent zones so the hip can be cradled, but properly supported.

The topper helps reduce tossing and turning, and unlike traditional zoned foam toppers that may include a bumpy plane of ridges and valleys, it features a smooth, consistent surface.

Comforters & Fill

Ogallala offers a range of fill weights in its Monarch comforter grouping to suit varied parts of the country that experience cool, colder and the coldest of winters. The Arctic provides the heaviest weight, followed by the moderate-weight Classic and the light-weight Southern. All three comforter styles are made with Hypodown 700 fill encased in long staple cotton sateen bordered with satin piping. The baffled box design is offered in a range of sizes from twin through super-king.

The Temperature Regulating Comforter from Cuddledown is created in response to the finding that as one sleeps, body temperature fluctuates and may result in a build-up of heat and humidity. The comforter employs hi-tech mesh to transport excess warmth away from the body, preventing perspiration and bringing body temperature into a comfortable range. During the cold seasons, the two-layered climate zones work as a pocket, warming the cool air to body temperature.

The Temperature Regulating Comforter is made in Maine with Oeko-Tex® certified, 280-thread-count, 100 percent combed cotton fabric and filled with hypoallergenic 800 Fill Power White Goose Down. The company also offers the comforter in synthetic and white duck down fill.

Invista offers the DACRON® Dreamessence fiberfill. The fine denier fibers are created to maintain down-like softness while providing the feel of micro-denier with lasting loft after numerous washes. Wash tests reveal that bedding products with DACRON® fiberfill hold their shape longer than down and down-alternative products.

In addition to machine washability and exceptional loft, DACRON® Dreamessence™ provides warmth and is hypoallergenic.

Pillows & Sheets

Having the correct head, neck and shoulder alignment allows muscles during sleep to fully relax. The Memory Foam VersaSleep™ Pillow from Sleep Innovations facilitates this alignment, as it offers therapeutic support in side, back and stomach sleep positions. Its gently curved edge insures proper support no matter which way the sleeper turns during the night.

Malouf's Bamboo Sheets feature a lightweight, soft finish and are naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant. The porous composition of the rayon from bamboo fibers produces a breathable and temperature-regulating fabric that can be used year-round. The fabric wicks moisture away from the body and the fiber pores help keep the sleeper cool. The sheets are equipped with deep pockets and Malouf’s Right-Fit™ elastic that insures the sheets will fit and stay on any mattress that is 6 to 22 inches thick.
