A man must make his opportunity, as oft as find it,” wrote Sir Francis Bacon in Advancement of Learning. “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door,” is how comedian Milton Berle said it as quoted in Dana Lightman’s Power Optimism.

However it is worded, the economic recession has brought with it opportunity as well as tribulation.

Since the economy is the proverbial “elephant in the room,” we could not help but address it in our annual “State Of The Industry” report. However, this special section is weighted more heavily towards examples of opportunities created and chances taken than on recounting tales of gloom.

We hope you are heartened by these insights into survival, perseverance and hard work and inspired to create some doors of opportunity of your own.
