The Towellers Limited manufacturing facility in Pakistan. below far right Towellers offers a range of products for the hospitality market as well as for residential and institutional sectors.

The Towellers Story: A Family Affair

Towellers Limited began as a family business, started in 1973 by S. M. Junaid in Pakistan to manufacture terry products. Eventually, his son, S.M. Obaid, as managing director and owner, grew the company to the extent that it had to be declared a public limited liability company in 1994.

With the passing of Obaid last year, the management of the $40 million enterprise has been transferred into the capable hands of the family’s third generation. Of Obaid’s six children (five daughters and one son), three now work together to run the company: Mehreen Obaid, managing director, overseeing sales, the towel division, finances and daily activities; Sana Obaid, director, overseeing raw materials procurements and administration; and Mahjabeen Obaid, director, who is the bed linen designer and the head of sales and marketing for the bed linen and table top divisions.

Though most textile companies in Pakistan are family run, Mahjabeen explains, “The unusual fact about our company is that it is run by three women, which is rare in the textile sector in our part of the world.”
This trio of sisters is on a mission to further grow and revitalize the company with a new vision that will take Towellers successfully through the 21st century.

“Towellers has undertaken a corporate rebranding, creating new benchmarks to embrace the changing face of the company,” says Mahjabeen. “It is our vision using the experience gained in the trade for more than 38 years, alongside a dedicated team, to emerge as leaders in our business areas. Our goal is to drive sales, grow profitable revenues and become the first choice for all our stakeholders, with a more centralized focus on being the most recognized manufacturer by our customers in the hospitality industry for towels, sheets and blankets.

“Retailers recognize Towellers as one of the largest terry towel manufacturers in Pakistan. However, apart from manufacturing towels we have a diverse product portfolio,” states Mahjabeen. “Our company has five divisions: towels, knitted apparel, socks, blankets and bed linens. We have a vertical set-up to ensure quality manufacturing. Over a million square feet of production space and machines makes us a one-stop shop to cater to the needs of a retailer.”

Towellers boasts more than 3,000 employees and plans to expand U.S. operations by soon adding a West Coast Laguna Beach office in addition to the existing New York showroom.

Though the challenges for any large business seeking to grow are formidable, Mahjabeen reveals that because the determined trio are sisters, family bonds of trust and dependability will help keep them securely on course toward meeting their new goals.
